Nov 2011 Part-Night Photocells in Leicestershire The Project The Council's annual carbon emissions totaled around 58,000 tonnes, of which street lighting accounted for around 18%. The principle aim of the project is to reduce energy consumption and therefore the cost of Leicestershire's annual energy budget by up to a quarter. When completed the programme could save up to 3,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, roughly the equivalent of 25% of Leicestershire County Council's street lighting carbon emissions. In addition, it is predicted that by reducing its energy consumption from street lighting the Council will cut its energy bill by £700,000 per year. As well as exchanging 40,000 all night photocells for part night photocells, the switching levels are being trimmed to provide additional savings. Approximately 2,000 high wattage lanterns will also be dimmed to lower light levels at times when the traffic flow is generally reduced compared to peak times. The project is being rolled out by Leicestershire County Council area-by-area following consultation with each area's representatives. Thus far responses have been extremely positive and there is widespread endorsement of the new policy. The Results. The strategy implemented by Leicestershire County Council, supported by the products and expertise provided by Zodion, has enabled the council to make significant savings already whilst eliminating the need to remove street lighting altogether during peak traffic flow periods or causing significant disruption to Leicestershire residents. So far both energy and cost savings are both in line with the targets set out by Leicestershire County Council and legislative requirements. Peter Hosking, Street Lighting Manager at Leicestershire County Council said: "I am happy with the partnership and close working relationship that we have built up with Zodion over the years. This has enabled us as a team to achieve impressive results for each project undertaken, with this latest one being no exception. Zodion understands our needs and the environment in which we work, and this coupled with its expertise and knowledge means that we receive consistently excellent service from them." October 2011 24th May 2011 John Fox, Zodion's MD commented '..this is great news and reflects our focus on environmentally responsible lighting control systems. I am impressed with the whole workforce for the way that they have embraced the certification process, thank you to all. ISO14001 nicely complements our existing ISO9001 quality management system registration.' ISO14001 provides a structure for an environmental management system, and the process within Zodion has resulted in resource savings far exceeding the costs of implementation. 12th May 2011 This news has been received extremely well by both Company employees and Customers alike and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Zodion. "I am rather proud of the statistic that the installed base of Zodion's electronic ballasts saves over 3GWh of electricity annually, and have reduced CO2 emissions by over 2,400 Tonnes. Over 30% of these ballasts can be directly connected to the Vizion CMS system and further energy savings can be achieved through the implementation of variable lighting levels". John continued to explain "Vizion is much more than just a method of implementing variable lighting levels, it provides a complete Central Management System. It is a very competent system which has been specifically developed considering the needs of streetlighting authorities". updated: 3rd July 2008 (originally 1st Feb 2008) Enlightened NE Lincolnshire CC NELC, is responsible for around 19,000 street lights. As Steve Redferan, Highway Services Manager, responsible for the council's street lighting department, explained: "Zodion's Vizion central telemanagement system (which utilises wireless technology to monitor and control street lighting remotely) provided many of the key elements we were looking for. An agreement was reached to evaluate the system and over the past few months an initial 200 'nodes' have been fitted in and around the streets of Grimsby and Immingham by contractors, J McCann. Steve added: "Vizion acts as a 'communications system' for monitoring, reporting and controlling street lighting over the internet. We are finding the system is reliable and offers safety benefits whereby inspectors don't have to patrol the streets on foot at night checking for faulty lightsin areas covered by the remote monitoring installation". 2nd July 2008 For the second year in a row Vic Janecki collected an award at the prestigious ASLEC/HEMSA award ceremony held at the Celtic Manor Hotel 1st November 2007.
